While the Norse saga may have seemingly concluded with God of War Ragnarök, it’s clear Santa Monica isn’t finished exploring that corner of the universe just yet. God of War: Laufey marks the next chapter for the franchise, and according to its lead actress, it’s only the start of something much bigger.
Announced during the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play, God of War: Laufey closed the showcase with more than 20 minutes of gameplay footage. The title shifts the spotlight away from Kratos and onto his late wife, Faye, as she journeys through the mysterious afterlife realm known as the Everywhen.
God Of War Laufey Expands The GoW Universe
Speaking with Comic Games Magazine, Deborah Ann Woll discussed what God of War: Laufey means for the future of the series, as well as the responsibility that comes with leading the next era of the franchise.
‘It’s a privilege,’ Woll explained, adding that she feels ‘nothing but gratitude and responsibility’ for taking on such a significant role.
When discussing the future of God of War, Woll revealed that Laufey represents a new direction for the franchise, while making it clear that Kratos’ story isn’t over. Instead, Santa Monica Studio is looking to broaden the scope of the universe and explore stories beyond the Ghost of Sparta’s perspective.
We want this to be huge. We want you to feel like there’s such an untapped universe. And this is just the beginning of a step into some of that.
Woll went on to explain that Laufey will further expand the mythology established in the Norse saga. The story runs alongside the events of 2018’s God of War, offering a new perspective on key moments and showing how Faye’s journey intertwines with Kratos’ own adventure.
It might star a new protagonist and cast of characters, but everything is pointing to Laufey being as God of War as ever before. Check out the reveal trailer below for a refresher of what’s to come.
