Gears of War: E-Day’s 4-Player Co-Op Was A ‘Huge Investment’

For the first time in a while, Gears is implementing four-player co-op, allowing you to enjoy the whole E-Day campaign with up to three other players. This was apparently a tricky endeavour, as you can imagine, for The Coalition.

Amongst Gears of War: E-Day’s qualities is the fact that you don’t have to face the Locust alone. One of the game’s standout gameplay inclusions is campaign co-op, and the team has delved into the process and behind-the-scenes.

Creative director Matt Searcy told GamesRadar:

“I’m not gonna lie, it’s a huge investment. We made the decision to support four player co-op to reflect an aspect of how the core Gears DNA feels. Our stories are almost always about a four-person squad, right?

We set a goal from the very beginning of development that we wanted you to be able to play as every single character. So in our campaign, you can pick any of the characters from the story – the story will be told entirely from that perspective, and you’ll never leave their side.

We have had modes that have supported four-player co-op in them in the past and clearly they work, so this was all about building the right spaces at the right sizes. You know, we build to make sure the game plays great in single-player, in two-player co-op, and then in three- and four-player co-op as well.”

We love single-player games, and Gears is built so that you can play it that way and have an amazing time. Our mechanics are designed in single-player, you’ll have the squad there with you, and the game will play great if you’re on your own. But we really believe in the co-op experience too, as you get to try different tactics and experiment with multiple things at once in our larger combat arenas – it’s a lot of fun.”

If you and your buddies want to experience the whole thing together, then you can.

You’ll want to have a few cold Mountain Dews in the fridge, though, as the game’s campaign length has reportedly broken a series record.

The Xbox console exclusive is about to tell a tale 20 years in the making, and there’s even a special chance to be one of the world’s first to play it through a special hands-on demo!

Here’s the fun Gear of War: E-Day gameplay reveal trailer from recently.
