Alan Ritchson will star in Sony’s Helldivers movie, which has been moved from November 2027 to June 2028, with Justin Lin remaining director. The movie was originally slated to star Jason Momoa, best known for playing Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe, but he exited the project this summer.
Sony announced the casting choice and the release-date delay in a press release. The Helldivers movie’s new official release date is June 9, 2028. The previous release date was November 10, 2027.
Video Game Movies and TV Shows Are Taking Over

IPs that first started in video games have continued to move beyond their original medium in recent years. Super Mario Bros. movies have performed strongly at the box office. Next year, Nintendo will bring one of its other heroes, Link of Hyrule, to the big screen in a live-action Legend of Zelda movie.
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie recently hit theaters to tremendous reviews. The movie quickly became the highest-rated video game adaptation on Rotten Tomatoes.
Numerous TV series have also been greenlit based on video game properties. Far Cry, God of War, Life Is Strange, and Assassin’s Creed all have TV projects in the works. The Last of Us is in production on its third season at HBO Max, which is expected to be its final season.
The entertainment world is clearly bullish on video game adaptations right now, and with this Helldivers movie not slated to release for another 2 years, that mindset doesn’t appear to be changing.
