At this point, we know quite a bit about Grand Theft Auto 6. From its criminal mechanics to the unique traits of its NPCs, Rockstar has gradually revealed more about what players can expect from its upcoming open-world adventure. However, one area the studio has remained relatively quiet about is the game’s story.
Rockstar is understandably keen to keep narrative details under wraps ahead of launch, but a new deep dive into the game has offered a better idea of what Jason and Lucia’s journey could look like, with the pair seemingly hoping to leave their criminal lives behind.
Jason & Lucia Want A Life Beyond Crime
Edge Magazine has published an extensive feature on Grand Theft Auto 6, exploring several aspects of the upcoming game, including its narrative. According to the feature, Jason and Lucia’s ultimate goal is to quit crime, offering a different perspective on the motivations driving the series’ latest protagonists.
This marks a potential departure from GTA 5, where money, material wealth, and power play significant roles in the protagonists’ respective stories. With GTA 6, however, Rockstar appears to be exploring something more personal.
Studio head Rob Nelson acknowledges that many players view the Grand Theft Auto series as a power fantasy, but suggests that Jason and Lucia are looking for something beyond that. While money remains a motivating factor, the pair seemingly have bigger ambitions for their lives and their relationship.
It’s an idea Rockstar previously explored in Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly through Arthur Morgan’s struggle between spending his money on himself and using it to support the rest of his camp. Nelson suggests that GTA 6 will build on this concept, giving its protagonists more nuanced motivations than simply accumulating wealth.
For Jason and Lucia, their relationship appears to be central to those ambitions. The game begins with the pair together and “wanting to give this relationship of theirs another shot.” Although their Bonnie and Clyde-inspired dynamic has been a major talking point since the game’s reveal, it seems Rockstar wants to explore what happens beyond their criminal exploits, including the kind of future they hope to build together.
Of course, whether Jason and Lucia can actually escape the criminal underworld remains to be seen. Given the series’ history, leaving that life behind is unlikely to be straightforward, potentially setting up an interesting conflict between the things they want and the actions they must take to achieve them.
Edge Magazine’s deep dive into GTA 6 didn’t stop there, either. 12 new screenshots were revealed, as well as a closer look at how big the map of Leonida actually is—spoiler: developers are still finding new areas they’ve never seen before.
