Five Pokémon That Would Shake Up the Pokémon Champions Meta

At this point, the VGC doubles meta is mostly solved for Pokémon Champions and its limited roster of playable Pokémon.

Though the winner of the first Global Challenge ran the surprising choice of Ariados on his team, showing there’s still room for creativity.

While Season M-1 ends on Wednesday, May 13, there’s going to be a longer wait for new Pokémon in Pokémon Champions.

Still, here are five non-legendary Pokémon that would completely revolutionise the current meta.

Mega Staraptor

One of the most highly anticipated Pokémon is the new Mega Evolution for Staraptor, which has never been playable in traditional battles.

If the rumours are true, Mega Staraptor is going to be monstrously broken if it doesn’t receive any nerfs.

According to leaks and data miners, Mega Staraptor will receive the ability Contrary, which reverses all stat changes.

This means the Pokémon can come in and lower everyone’s attack with Intimidate, then Mega Evolve to become a part-fighting type and hit a STAB Close Combat and then increase both its defense and special defense.

With its base 140 attack and 110 speed, this Mega would immediately become one of the most powerful options in the game.

Gholdengo

Gholdengo was one of the strongest Pokémon from generation nine, and it matches up beautifully into the current Pokémon Champions meta.

Its rare typing of Steel Ghost and its Good As Gold ability making it immune to status moves makes it rather tough to take down.

With immunity to both poison and fighting-type attacks, it completely walls Sneasler, one of the most-used mons in Pokémon Champions.

Its high special attack and signature steel-type move, Make It Rain, would also allow it to delete Mega Floette, one of the strongest Pokémon in the current meta.

Rillaboom

So far, the Pokémon Champions meta has revolved around weather wars with sand, rain, sun, and snow teams all dominating the ladder.

Considering the game’s simplicity, the addition of more reliable terrain setters would completely flip the meta on its head.

And few are more reliable than Rillaboom, which can automatically set Grassy Terrain with its Grassy Surge ability.

This terrain restores every grounded Pokémon’s HP slightly, boosts grass attacks by 50%, and weakens Earthquake and similar moves.

Bulky Rillaboom benefits from the heals and increased damage, especially with the powerful priority move Glassy Glide which lets it effectively counter Trick Room and Tailwind.

Amoongus

Another Grass type, Amoongus has long been a staple of competitive Pokémon.

While Sinistcha has been plaguing the Pokémon Champions ladder, Amoongus may outclass it with its ridiculous bulk.

Amoongus is very difficult to kill, especially with its Regenerator ability, which heals it every time it switches out.

And it has access to very powerful moves in VGC, such as Rage Powder and Spore, making it an excellent utility pick.

Galarian Weezing

Finally, Galarian Weezing would add some very necessary counterplay to Pokémon Champions.

Its ability Neutralizing Gas, unique to the Weezing line, stops the abilities of all Pokémon while it’s on the field.

This would be absolutely massive in the current game state, especially as there is currently no answer to Mega Scovillain’s Spicy Spray ability, which burns every Pokémon that attacks it.

Shutting down other abilities like Intimidate, Archuladon’s Stamina, and Mega Meganium’s Mega Sol could be game-winning.

Plus, Galarian Weezing’s Poison Fairy typing and impressive bulk make it a very useful pick.
