Dying Light Franchise Director Steps Down After 13 Years at Techland

Dying Light’s leadership team has undergone a drastic change today as Tymon Smektala, veteran developer, announces his departure from Techland after thirteen years at the firm. Smektala started with Techland in May 2013, working as a game designer, before moving into a production role on the first Dying Light game.

Smektala departs the company, having most recently served almost four years as the Franchise Director behind the entire Dying Light series, the last deliverable of which role was to push out Dying Light: The Beast.

Tymon Smektala Departs Techland After a Decade

In a post on social media, Tymon Smektala, former Franchise Director of Dying Light at Techland, wrote:

After years with Dying Light, I’m moving into a new chapter. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m proud of what we’ve built.

Thank you to all the talented people of Techland I’ve had the chance to work with – across both development and publishing – for the passion, energy, and shared ambition to make Dying Light the ultimate zombie experience. We made it happen, together!

And to our amazing community: your love, engagement, and vocal support have always been our North Star. You helped shape what Dying Light became.

The franchise is in great hands, and I’m excited to see it grow even further, and I can’t wait to experience its next chapter as a player. I’ll always root for Dying Light!

Good night, and good luck!

Last year, Techland released Dying Light: The Beast, a whirlwind title that brought Kyle Crane, the game’s first protagonist, back into the limelight. It effectively kickstarted a new chapter of the Dying Light saga, which is what I learned when I sat down with Tymon a year ago in Los Angeles.

That was when he told me that Dying Light: The Beast was being thought of internally as Dying Light 3.

It was also when I learned more about the nugget of a game that was Dying Light: Hellrunners, a title that ultimately never saw the light of day.

Smektala hasn’t indicated what he moves onto, but I’m excited to see where he goes next.
