Nearly ten years later, Kiln from Double Fine Productions has finally received a release date. The game was first announced in 2017, born from Double Fine’s ‘Amnesia Fortnight’ event, an annual two-week game jam that produces prototype game ideas. The game remained mostly silent for a decade before re-emerging during the January 2026 Xbox Developer Direct.
Now, it’s been announced that the game will be released on April 23. Xbox confirmed the news in its most recent Xbox Wire post. The game is a multiplayer online Pottery party brawler. Interested players can sign up for an open Beta right now. The beta will take place on April 9-11.
More on Kiln
Originally announced in 2017, it was described as a multiplayer, team-based brawler by Derek Brand, featuring unique player-sculpted characters and dynamic, physics-based animation and destruction. Now, the game has a fully developed pottery-driven approach.
“In Kiln, you shape a small, medium, or large ball of clay into a vessel on a pottery wheel with surprisingly intuitive controls. The size and shape of the vessel determines its stats (like health and capacity for water) and special ability (with different abilities corresponding to shapes like bowls, chalices, bottles, etc.). Decorate with various glazes and cosmetic attachments (all for style), and you’re good to go. The matches comprise two teams of four pots competing to gather water and quench the other team’s kiln three times before the same is done to theirs, breaking enemy pots along the way in chaotic brawls,” the Xbox Wire post describes.
Notably, it was stated that there would be no voice chats integrated into the game itself. Derek Brand has explained that the studio wants to keep the game friendly for all ages.
Insider Gaming will continue to bring the latest updates on Kiln as the game approaches release. The game will be available on Xbox, PC, PlayStation 5, and Steam. Also available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
