Bungie’s plans to bring vaulted content back to Destiny 2 are going to take considerably longer than some fans may have expected, with the studio revealing that its current Unvaulting plans won’t reach their next major milestone until early 2028.
For those unfamiliar, Bungie previously vaulted significant portions of Destiny 2 to make room for new expansions and updates, removing several campaigns, activities, and destinations from the game. The developer is now working to restore some of that missing content, although the process is still a long way from completion.
Destiny 2 Unvaulting Timeline Revealed
In a new blog post, Bungie outlined the timeline for its Unvaulting initiative, revealing that the process is expected to take until early 2028 to reach its initial release stage.
The roadmap consists of five stages, with Scoping and Validation already complete. Bungie is currently in Pre-Production, which is expected to continue until January or February 2027.
Things get a little less encouraging from there, however, as the studio estimates that the Production phase will take approximately 12 months. While Bungie hasn’t provided a specific release date, this timeline suggests that the first major batch of Unvaulted content won’t arrive until January or February 2028 at the earliest.
As for what players can expect, Bungie’s primary objective is to restore the game’s missing campaigns and associated content. The initial release is expected to include the following:
- Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind campaigns
- Strikes from the above releases
- Raids, and Raid Lairs from the above releases
- Menagerie Activity with reprised rewards
Once this initial batch has been delivered, Bungie plans to turn its attention towards a series of additional features and activities that it describes as “stretch goals.” These could expand the scope of Unvaulting considerably, although their inclusion isn’t guaranteed.
The current list of potential additions includes:
- Free Roam Destinations (Public Events, Lost Sectors, Escalation Protocol, etc.)
- Seasonal Activities from Sundial (Season 9) to The Coil (Season 23)
- Raid and Raid Lair Weapon updates
- PvP Maps
Bungie has made it clear that these additional features remain subject to change as it works to find the right balance between restoring older content and preparing Destiny as a franchise for the future.
