Codemasters has confirmed that an unspecified number of layoffs will be made in a bid to evolve, meet the growing needs of players, and drive a greater focus across its portfolio. That’s the portfolio that was recently thrown into question when Electronic Arts revealed that all rally games are being put on hold – which directly impacts Codemasters.
This news also comes following a sweeping wave of layoffs at Electronic Arts that has directly impacted several hundred employees.
Red Flag
Codemasters issued a statement to VGC explaining that:
As a business, we are constantly evolving to meet the growing needs of our players and driving greater focus across our portfolio.
This has led us to look at reducing some roles, while we redeploy as many as possible against our strategic priorities.
Codemasters has been producing rally and racing games for almost thirty years, building up an impressive portfolio as a leader in the space. The UK-based company was secured by Electronic Arts in a whopping $1.2 billion acquisition in 2021, with the firm adding Codemasters to a lengthy array of studios under the EA banner.
Recently, Codemasters unveiled F1 25, lifting the lid on the latest iteration of the annual franchise.
This isn’t the first time that Codemasters has faced layoffs, though. In December 2023, the studio was hit with redundancies amid one of the most turbulent periods for the wider games industry. It was confirmed by the company at the time that the bulk of the layoffs were centred around the QA team.
EA’s recent blog post about pausing the development of rally games explained:
Every great journey eventually finds its finish line, and today, we announce that we’ve reached the end of the road working on WRC.
We hope it remains a source of joy, excitement, and the thrill of rally racing. We’ve poured our hearts into making it for fans, and we know you’ll keep the passion alive.
Codemasters has yet to confirm how many employees will be impacted by this wave of layoffs.
