EA Sports Pausing Development On Future Rally Racing Games

EA Sports has announced that it will be “pausing development plans” on all future rally racing titles. That means that the recently released Hard Chargers Content update for EA Sports WRC will be the last expansion for the game, and the last bit of rally content for the series for the time being.

“Every great journey eventually finds its finish line, and today, we announce that we’ve reached the end of the road working on WRC,” EA Sports said in a blog post on the game’s website.

The company says that players will still be able to buy and play EA Sports WRC despite development of the game ending.

“We hope it remains a source of joy, excitement, and the thrill of rally racing,” they said. “We’ve poured our hearts into making it for fans, and we know you’ll keep the passion alive.”

EA calls its partnership with WRC a “culmination of sorts for our Codemasters journey with off-road racing, spanning decades through titles like Colin McRae Rally, and DiRT.”

“We’ve provided a home for every rally enthusiast, striving tirelessly to push the boundaries and deliver the exhilarating thrill of driving on the ragged edge,” they said. “We’ve brought together incredibly talented racing developers, worked with some of the sport’s icons, and had the opportunity to share our love of rallying.”

EA and Codemasters acquired the exclusive WRC license in 2020 with games scheduled starting in 2023. With the license, only EA Sports WRC was released in 2023 and spanned both the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

There is currently no information on the status of the WRC license itself aside from a social media post stating that the WRC franchise is “going in an ambitious new direction with more news coming in the near future.”
