CoD Mobile Makes More Money in a Month Than Warzone Mobile in a Year

For more insight into why Activision pulled the plug on Warzone Mobile, CoD Mobile blew the battle royale out of the water in sales.

On May 18, Activision removed Warzone Mobile from the Google Play and Apple App Stores. If you have already downloaded the game, the servers will still be active with matchmaking for online play, but there will be no more gameplay updates or seasonal content.

As for why, Activision admitted, “It unfortunately has not met our expectations with mobile-first players like it has with PC and console audiences.” This comes after Warzone Mobile saw 45 million sign-ups pre-launch. Ultimately, that anticipation didn’t translate to financial success.

Even though Warzone Mobile generated $1.4 million in revenue within four days of release in March 2024, The Game Business reported, “In terms of revenue, since launch in March 2024, Call of Duty Warzone on mobile has grossed around $17m (App Magic figures, excludes Google’s and Apple’s 30% cut). By comparison, Call of Duty Mobile made more than that last month alone.”

CoD Mobile surpassed one billion downloads in November 2024, making it the best-selling CoD game ever. And according to PocketGamer, CoD Mobile passed $3 billion in lifetime revenue in July 2023, accounting for half of the franchise’s all-time engagement.

Despite Warzone Mobile’s shortcomings, Microsoft is still expected to make a push in mobile gaming.

“Don’t expect this to alter Microsoft’s determination to grow in mobile,” The Game Business claimed. “The firm has frequently cited mobile as an opportunity for its key brands to find new audiences, particularly in markets where console and PC gaming remains small.”

Activision did not reveal when Warzone Mobile will shut down its servers for good, so enjoy the game while you still can.
