It has been claimed by a prominent reporter that a remake of the first BioShock game, originally released in 2007, was ‘shelved’ earlier this year by 2K Games. This news went hand-in-hand with a reveal that the next BioShock game finds itself back in development hell after a major leadership shakeup.
It has been more than a decade since the last new BioShock game hit the market, and the franchise is starting to edge into an abyss.
BioShock Back
To fill the gap between BioShock Infinite and BioShock 4 (not a confirmed title), it would have been great to get our hands on a remake of BioShock. We came close, but not close enough, as earlier this year, 2K Games shelved the title.
This report comes courtesy of Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who was breaking the news that a leadership adjustment has occurred on the next BioShock game because of a lack of confidence higher up the chain.
In a statement on the franchise, a 2K Games spokesperson revealed to Schreier:
We are working hard to set BioShock up for the best possible future. Right now, we have a good game, but we are committed to delivering a great one. We are working closely with leadership at the studio to define this path.
BioShock emerged in 2007 as a dramatically unique title with an intriguing story and some phenomenal combat mechanics. It was expanded on in 2010 with BioShock 2, and then things took a colourful, time-bending turn in 2012’s BioShock Infinite, the most recent game in the series.
The news that a BioShock remake was shut down is a hard pill to swallow, as at this rate, it feels as though we’ll never see another BioShock game again.
