Double Fine Revives Amnesia Fortnight After XBOX Split

Double Fine is reviving Amnesia Fortnight on August 31, letting Kickstarter backers vote on game prototypes and its next release.

It’s been a whirlwind couple of months for Double Fine Productions. After the release of Kiln, reports said the studio was negotiating with XBOX to avoid closure. In early July, the studio announced it would once again go independent, and later that same month, it had to hold a round of layoffs.

Now, the studio has announced one of its first major steps towards revitalization. Double Fine is reviving its Amnesia Fortnight. The 2026 iteration will be a live game jam that returns on August 31. Kickstarter backers can vote on four prototypes and decide which becomes a finished game.

The Kickstarter campaign will run for most of September, and four prototypes will be made, with one eventually becoming a real game. Additionally, 2 Player Productions will produce a documentary that films the process.

The team has put this concept into action several times over the past decade. In 2017, one of the games featured was the recently released Kiln.

Double Fine’s Next Game Will Be Chosen by Fans

In addition to announcing the upcoming game Jam, Tim Schafer discussed the studio’s future during an appearance on Kinda Funny Games Daily.

In addition to announcing the upcoming game jam, Tim Schafer discussed the studio’s future during an appearance on Kinda Funny Games Daily. Schafer explained that Microsoft gave the studio a “financial runway” after their split, and this game jam is designed to extend it.

“Being independent again, we can go back to doing a lot of things we were doing before,” he said. “We got a little bit of a runway on the departure to sign some games. We want to sign some game deals and get going. It’s kind of a scary time to be out there, but it’s a runway, not a freeway. It doesn’t go forever. It’s just a little patch where we can take off on our own power, and we want to extend it a little bit.”
