Double Fine Productions has announced that it has had to lay off nearly two dozen employees. The news comes just weeks after it was announced that the company was returning to being independent following seven years under Xbox.
In a post on Bluesky on Tuesday, the company said that it let go of 23 employees. That accounts for roughly 25% of the total headcount at the studio.
Layoffs Were Done To Survive
In his statement, Double Fine founder Tim Schafer said that these cuts were done to ensure the studio stays open.
“As a small, tightly-knit team, these actions are not taken lightly,” Schafer said. “Only the survival of our studio would ever make us consider such a painful action. Our transition to becoming an independent company also means becoming a size that we can sustain.”
Schafer called everyone being let go “important” to Double Fine, adding that they had an impact on the games and culture of the studio.
“We are committed to supporting each affected person as best as we can, and we thank them for their hard work and commitment to the creative spirit we cherish here at Double Fine,” Schafer said while saying everyone leaving will be missed.
