A few weeks ago, fans of EA Sports College Football 27 took to social media to protest the inclusion of microtransactions in single-player modes, along with the removal of XP sliders in Road to Glory. The pushback led to EA removing the microtransactions from both Road to Glory and Dynasty Mode, while adding new XP gain options to the latter.
At the time, I had reported that should EA reverse course on anything, it wouldn’t be a permanent decision. And with the launch of Madden 27 coming in just over a week, that’s exactly the case.
EA Adding More Ways To Spend Money
It’s understood that Madden 27 will include more microtransactions in its single-player Superstar mode. There will also be more monetization options in other aspects of the game to help speed up overall progression.
When asked whether the increase in microtransactions in the games had anything to do with the pending sale to the Saudi Arabia PIF, one source said they couldn’t be sure, but that increasing revenue was a heavy discussion internally.
The same source said that where they believe the mistake came with college football was the lack of upfront communication. They say that the company is aiming to be clearer with communication on their plans in order to avoid surprises like what happened with College Football 27.
Regarding the expected social media response from fans and creators, sources say EA is prepared for what’s likely to come. While they hope that better communication will result in less of an uproar, they know there will be a group that will be upset. However, it was said that it’s unlikely they will pivot in a way they did for college football.
“They won’t give in to every social media movement,” one person familiar with the plans said.
