It has been 12 years since the last new BioShock game was released, and the aging fans of the franchise are fast forgetting it existed in the first place. Sadly, the next BioShock game has been writhing under the weight of development hell for more than a decade, and according to a recent report, things have gotten even worse.
In a new report published by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, it was revealed that the game’s management team has been ‘shaken up’ after BioShock failed an executive review at the hands of 2K Games.
Is BioShock Still Coming?
Fans would be forgiven for thinking that a new BioShock game feels like a fever dream.
In May 2023, it was claimed that ‘BioShock 4’ had entered a state of troubled production known fondly (or perhaps not) as ‘development hell‘, and it seems it has been locked firmly in that state ever since.
Back then, the claim was that BioShock’s next game was having script-related issues that made drawing up an intriguing story more than a challenge for the team.
According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, things are still not going well over at Cloud Chamber, the team developing the next BioShock game.
Here’s what Schreier reported:
Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. is overhauling parts of the next BioShock game and shaking up management after senior executives expressed they were unhappy with its development, according to people familiar with the situation.
There are concerns that Cloud Chamber may face layoffs as restructuring looks imminent. Not only that, but there’s a cultural shift on the horizon that’ll dictate how the team works, with management stressing that Cloud Chamber needs to be more ‘agile and efficient’.
In a statement responding to Bloomberg, 2K Games wrote:
We are working hard to set BioShock up for the best possible future. Right now, we have a good game, but we are committed to delivering a great one. We are working closely with leadership at the studio to define this path.
