Roblox To Improve Safety With New Account Types and Expanded Parental Controls

Roblox has just announced it’s introducing two new age-based accounts for young users on the platform, and it’s also extending parental controls.

The safety of younger users on Roblox has been a concern for some time, especially as several serious issues have emerged on the platform. Just this month, a man was jailed for grooming a teen through the game. Now, Roblox has announced it will implement additional security measures to protect its young audience better.

Roblox Reveals New Age-Based Accounts and Enhanced Parental Controls

The two new age-based accounts will have been announced to younger users on the platforms, with 5- to 8-year-olds required to use Roblox Kids and 9- to 15-year-olds required to use Roblox Select. Both of the new account types will closely align content access, communication settings, and parental controls with a user’s age. Additionally, the teams are reviewing games to determine which should be made available to users under 16.

If a player starts with a Roblox Kids account, they will automatically transition to Roblox Select when they turn 9, and then eventually to a standard account when they turn 16. Regarding the content, there is a process that dynamically selects games by verifying the developer, conducting extended content evaluation, and adding additional limits.

Roblox Kids will have all communication disabled by default, and the design will include a distinct background color to indicate the account type to other users. Roblox Select will also receive the visual treatment and limited access to games with Minimal or Mild labels. Also, default communications settings remain unchanged for ages 9-15.

Furthermore, the enhancements to parental controls will allow parents to manage content ratings, communication settings, and screen time and spending limits. The enhancements have been made to bring transparency to the games their child is spending time on and who they are interacting with. The update gives parents one new control and retains access to certain controls until a child turns 16.

Parents will also be able to block individual games, manage direct chat, and approve access to games not otherwise available under the child’s default account type.

The new account types will roll out in June and will bring age checks, account-level defaults, content ratings, ongoing moderation, and expanded parental controls. Check out the quotes from Larry Magid, ConnectSafely CEO, and Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Officer at Roblox, below:

Larry: “By combining age assurance, stronger creator accountability, and parental controls, Roblox is helping set a higher standard for how platforms can better protect younger users while preserving positive online experiences.”

Matt: “With the launch of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, we are fundamentally shifting how games are discovered on our platform. Safety isn’t a static feature—it’s a journey that evolves as a child grows. While no system is perfect, these age-adaptive accounts are designed to help remove the guesswork for parents and help align users’ experiences with their age.”

In other news, Roblox has addressed the ongoing situation involving a 15-year-old user who disappeared. Additionally, Russia has banned Roblox, accusing the platform of distributing extremist materials. What are your thoughts on Roblox announcing new account types and expanded parental controls?
