I Got Hands-On With a Gaming Mouse You’ll Never See Again

At DreamHack Birmingham, I was fortunate enough to get face time with Razer, learning about some of the most iconic upcoming items that promise to pad out the peripheral collections of gaming’s most avid aficionados. This included a $500 ‘signature edition’ of the Razer Huntsman, complete with a leather carrying box and limited to just 1,337 units.

But the pick of what I saw was something so rare that I will forever be one of the few people in the world to get my hands on it. It was a critical part of the production of the 20th Anniversary Edition of the Razer Boomslang, the ‘gaming mouse that started it all’ back in 1999.

Razer Boomslang, Made Modern and Hyper Rare

The Razer Boomslang 20th Anniversary Edition is a limited-release version of the legendary mouse from the turn of the millennium, brought up to spec and given a mind-boggling price tag of $1,337. It’s all sold out now, which comes as no surprise, given that it was limited to, you guessed it, 1,337 units.

It’s an iconic thing, boasting Razer’s patented Chroma RGB technology, a handsome charging dock, and the recognizable profile of the original Boomslang, which dropped more than 25 years ago.

The 20th Anniversary Edition also comes with a phenomenal ‘exploded frame’, a separate item that immortalizes each layer of the Boomslang, on display for all to see.

However, the version that I got hands-on with at DreamHack Birmingham transcends that rarity.

I was lucky enough to hold in my hands one of just eight ‘golden sample’ Boomslang mice produced ahead of the core manufacturing of the 1,337 final products. It got even rarer when it was explained that almost every other golden sample was kept under lock and key in Singapore, at Razer’s headquarters.

Put simply, I was grasping a piece of history, remade. The Boomslang was the mouse that changed everything back in 1999, and the 20th Anniversary Edition was doing it all over again, with gaming’s most tried and tested collectors taking immense pride in securing their purchase earlier this year.
