Former Call of Duty Director Wants to ‘Fix’ Fallout

In a recent interview, a former Call of Duty multiplayer director suggested he has something to offer Bethesda Game Studios when it comes to Fallout 5. In his words, the gunplay in Fallout is ‘terrible right now’ and needs shaping up, which is something that a former Call of Duty veteran should have no problem doing.

The segment in the interview was based entirely on a hypothetical scenario. The former director in question, Greg Reisdorf, is not about to waltz into Bethesda and secure a job finessing Fallout 5’s combat systems, but you never know, right?

Greg Reisdorf Thinks He Can Make Fallout Better

In an interview with Hellcase, Greg Reisdorf, who drove the direction of Sledgehammer Games’ multiplayer systems for fifteen years, spoke about a topic out of left field. Later in his interview, the discussion turned to Fallout, with Reisdorf revealing he is a huge Fallout fan.

He said nice things about the television show and expressed his joy at having the chance to work with Bethesda Game Studios on a Fallout x Call of Duty collaboration before he departed Sledgehammer in 2025.

But one thing he isn’t keen on is the gunplay present in Fallout games. He was asked by the interviewer if he would consider offering his services to Todd Howard of Bethesda, to which he said:

I will be there tomorrow, Todd! I will be there tomorrow.

My God. It is terrible right now. Whatever you are doing, do not do what you are doing. There’s so many issues with the animations. Their engine is rough, especially in first person.

I think they use the same models between first and third person. You have to dig in completely into what they are doing in first person. Their whole ADS thing, I think it was click to ADS. It was not a smooth dynamic transitional ADS.

He then went on to talk about how multiplayer wouldn’t necessarily work with Fallout’s VATS mechanic, the aim-assist feature that has been a part of the franchise for many years. He seemed to forget that Fallout 76, a multiplayer-based Fallout title, has existed since 2018.

Reisdorf suggested that Bethesda Game Studios can’t focus on ‘weapons and items’ because they’re potentially spending too much time building ‘such a large world scale’. It’s not easy to have incredible weapons and combat elements when you’re building such enormously detailed environments:

If you are going to do a shooter, the weapons should be the main characters.

Do you think Greg Reisdorf, a former Call of Duty veteran, could lend a hand on the next Fallout title? Let us know what you’re thinking on the Insider Gaming Discord server.

  • This guy just wanted to fish for a job opportunity…. If he was actually a Fallout fan he would have known that Fallout is an RPG, not a first person shooter. While gunplay is still important it is not the no1 factor. And to be fair, Fallout 4 was massively improved in gunplay and it not bad at all.
