Wargaming has announced that its new live service title, Steel Hunters, will be closing down in October 2025.
The announcement comes just three months after the game went live, during which time, according to SteamDB, it reached a concurrent high of 4,479 players. At the time of writing and in the past 24 hours, the game’s concurrent peak stood at just 97 players.
Announced over on its Steam page, Wargaming said,
“Today we share difficult news: we’ve made the decision to sunset Steel Hunters. You’ve given us so much passion and support but unfortunately we’ve come to the conclusion that continuing development is not sustainable. We know this isn’t the news anyone wanted to hear and we genuinely share in your disappointment.”
The game will shut down in 90 days, around October 8th, the announcement says. During this time, Wargaming has announced that it will run a ‘goodbye tournament’, with more details to be announced by the developers at a later date.
Wargaming is known for its hugely successful live-service games, such as World of Tanks and World of Warships, but its latest endeavor into a fictional world has not paid off.
Before Wargaming announced Steel Hunters it would be closing its doors, the game was in development for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X.
A Bigger Live-Service Issue?
As of late, live-service games have been shutting down left, right, and centre due to low player numbers and a lack of return on investment. It’s unfortunately the inevitable future of the industry, where there are too many games and too little time.
As players continue to stay in ecosystems and platforms such as Fortnite, players simply don’t have the time to try, play, and, more importantly for the publishers, buy new games.
