Where the Chips Fall Reveals Hand With A New Look At Its Glorious Balatro-Inspired Gameplay

If Where the Chips Fall immediately makes you think of the word ‘Balatro,’ then there’s nothing wrong with that. The game’s Steam page mentions LocalThunk’s 2024 GOTY contender almost instantly, and it’s not a bad game to draw inspiration from.

The core premise of Where the Chips Fall is Blackjack, the classic casino game that has gleefully stripped many of their hard-earned cash. As a roguelite, Where the Chips Fall has a few tricks up its sleeves that even the most aware casino manager would fail to pick up on.

The dealer can fight back with its own tricks, and every hand becomes a fascinating battle of attrition. This could easily be the new roguelite if Coquito Games plays its cards right, and you can learn more, thanks to the Insider Gaming Showcase.

What Is Where the Chips Fall?

Key Features

  • Use betting chips to modify the game mechanics.
  • Chip can modify the rules of a standard Blackjack game.
  • Dealers have unique chips of their own, such as winning on a push or Blackjack happening on 22 instead of 21.
  • You can claim these powerful chips by besting each dealer and earning enough money to buy out from the table.
  • In rogue-lite tradition, you can purchase additional random abilities in between tables.
  • If you fall short, you can use your cash to purchase permanent upgrades for the next run.
  • Reach the final table to be rewarded with bonus difficulty options.

The Studio Behind Where the Chips Fall

The fully remote studio was founded in 2025 following the Game Developers Conference. However, the team has been working together for longer, prototyping and trying to find the right fit for their sensibilities. When they landed on Where the Chips Fall, they began to develop in earnest.

Coquito Games has big ambitions too: “We wanted to ship something small and simple to get our name out there so we can tackle bigger projects,” describes the studio director. Their ultimate goal is to begin telling underrepresented stories.

To that end, the next project on their roadmap is an ambitious hip-hop inspired j-RPG titled Concrete Rose, though they’re being quiet on that front. It can’t be easy being a self-published studio, but the team at Coquito Games is paving a way forward.
