Valve has issued a statement declaring that a reported data leak did not breach Steam systems, confirming that no action is required to secure your account.
Reports on Wednesday, May 14, declared that Steam was the target of a huge data breach and suggested that private account information, which may have included password information, payment details, or personal data.
However, Valve has now spoken on the matter with a statement confirming that, although there was a leak, it “consisted of older text messages that included one-time codes that were only valid for 15-minute time frames and the phone numbers they were sent to.”
Although personal phone numbers look to have been accessed, Valve added that “the leaked data did not associate the phone numbers with a Steam account, password information, payment information or other personal data.”
The statement assured users that old text messages cannot breach the security of your Steam account and, should a code ever be used to change your Steam email or password using SMS, confirmation will be received via email and Steam secure messages.
Do You Need to Take Any Action After Steam Leak?

The big question on everyone’s lips is whether you need to make any changes to your account after the Steam leak but Valve confirmed “you do not need to change your passwords or phone numbers as a result of this event.”
However, the statement added that “it is a good reminder to treat any account security messages you have not explicitly requested as suspicious” and advised regularly keeping an eye on your Steam account security.
Valve also advised users to set up the Steam Mobile Authenticator, stating it’s the “best way to send secure messages about your account and your account’s safety.”
