The Witcher Remake on Hold, Confirms CD Projekt Red

We’ve been treated to so much cool The Witcher news recently, from new expansions to tidbits on The Witcher 4. This news isn’t as good because work on The Witcher Remake has been paused as The Witcher 4 takes priority—sort of.

The original Witcher Remake announcement is actually four years old. We heard The Witcher Remake was open world, which is great for RPG fans, but the longer time has gone on, many have begun to wonder where the game is and why we haven’t heard much.

The Witcher 4 and The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past are happening, but The Witcher Remake has to sit things out for a while.

Through GameSpot, reaching out to CD Projekt Red, it’s been discovered that the remake developer, Fool’s Theory, is working to help The Witcher 4 to completion, which will allow The Witcher Remake to continue production.

Here’s the official statement given to GameSpot:

‘Fool’s Theory team is focused mainly on the development of Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, while a relatively small part of their team is supporting the development of The Witcher 4. As we have previously announced, the development on The Witcher Remake has been temporarily integrated with The Witcher 4 due to production process dependencies. As The Witcher Remake will be built on the foundation laid by The Witcher 4, we need to have the necessary assets, tools, and pipelines ready for efficient development.’

So, once the tech and foundations are laid down by The Witcher 4 and the game is done, THEN development of The Witcher Remake can continue. It’s unclear how far into development The Witcher Remake was or when production was stopped, but once The Witcher 4 is out, it should be good to go again.

Incredibly, The Witcher 3 beat every other game in new wishlists during Gamescom. It’s disappointing that we won’t get the remake for a while, but there’s still plenty of new Witcher content to enjoy in the meantime.
