The Witcher 3 Director Calls Dispatch ‘Game of the Year’, Says AI Couldn’t Create It

Dispatch has been one of the biggest winners in 2025. AdHoc Studio consists of several Telltale Games devs, and they’ve created a storytelling success, so much so that The Witcher 3 director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz had labeled Dispatch as their Game of the Year.

Alongside calling Dispatch GOTY, the creative talent believes that AI couldn’t have single-handedly made a game like it. The director thinks the use of AI is good for gaming, but not to the extent of stealing work or replacing real people.

Dispatch Couldn’t Be Made By AI

In an interview with Eurogamer, Tomaszkiewicz (director of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077) opened up on AI in gaming and why Dispatch couldn’t have happened solely with AI.

“I think that AI should help people and AI shouldn’t replace them. To be honest, I’d prefer to do it automatically – we have the tools for that; not AI but our own tool – and use the time of the people to tell me if the game is good,” he said. “If the feel of the gameplay is proper. If the story is good and the dialogues: they understand it, they feel emotions and so on. This is the way we should use the skills of creative people.”

Tomaszkiewicz added that they’re “not totally against AI,” but think it should be used to evolve work and aid workers:

“I don’t believe that it [AI] will replace the creative people. It can help, but not replace them. I don’t feel that games created with only AI will have soul. I don’t believe it. Really.”

This led the director to Dispatch, and how it caught his attention in 2025.

“I finished Dispatch recently, which is my game of the year. I love this game. And I don’t believe that AI could create something like this. It’s not possible. You need to have people who feel, who have this creative fire, who want to prove something, who want to tell you a particular story and create emotions in these particular moments. A machine will not understand us as much.”

There’s a lot to digest here. Firstly, it really is hard to have a gaming conversation without mentioning AI at this point, for better or for worse. We recently learned that iconic Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser is using AI for an upcoming game, but they also believe that AI isn’t the be-all and end-all of everything.

Away from the AI topic, it’s nice to see a game like Dispatch get so much recognition. Insider Gaming’s recent interview with AdHoc developers dove into the creative process and the game’s immediate success.

It’s also sold two million copies in less than a month, and is up for ‘Best Debut Indie Game’ at The Game Awards 2025. Head on over to the Insider Gaming Discord Server to talk about Dispatch and AI use in games.
