Super Mario Sunshine Gets NSO Launch Date in Japan

It appears that Nintendo isn’t done celebrating the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. just yet. A new YouTube video from Nintendo’s Japanese channel has revealed when one of the biggest GameCube releases will come to Nintendo Switch Online in the region.

The video reveals that Super Mario Sunshine, the only mainline 3D Mario release for that generation, is coming to Nintendo Classics on August 13, 2026. It is unclear whether there will be a global launch on the same day. The game originally launched in 2002 and is widely considered to be one of the lesser Mario adventures. Still, it will be reintroduced to a new generation via the Nintendo subscription service.

One of the more obvious titles to come to the service, the Nintendo GameCube has largely disappointed subscribers, with little love for the console more than a year after it was added to Nintendo’s subscription. Other notable games included in the service so far include Soul Calibur II, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, Wario World, and Super Mario Strikers. Players are still waiting for notable inclusions such as Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Super Mario Sunshine was the first mainline Mario title to not serve as a system’s launch game. In 2026, Nintendo players are waiting longer than ever for the next 3D Mario adventure. Super Mario Odyssey was released in 2017, and thus far we have not seen even a trailer for the next Mario 3D experience. Still, it was reported that the game is expected to launch in 2027.
