A new claim from one of the most reliable leakers in the video game space provides some new clarity on when the next 3D Mario game may finally arrive.
NateTheHate shared on his most recent podcast that the next new 3D Mario title is likely to be released in 2027. However, at one point, expectations were for Nintendo to release the game in the holiday season this year.
“One game that will not be releasing in holiday 2026 is 3D Mario. 3D Mario will be releasing in 2027,” he said. “The expectation was that they’d have a 3D Mario out in Holiday 2026. That expectation’s not going to become a reality.”
A Decade Since Super Mario Odyssey on the Nintendo Switch
2027 will mark 10 years since the release of Super Mario Odyssey on the original Nintendo Switch. That was the last full new 3D Mario title.
This will be the longest stretch without a brand-new Mario 3D platformer. The previous record was the seven years between Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario Odyssey. More recently, the focus of the Mario brand has been on the big screen. In 2023, The Super Mario Bros Movie was released, and on April 1, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released.
There was a time when Nintendo fans expected a 3D Mario game to be announced to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Entertainment System. However, Nintendo announced the release of the Galaxy Movie as the main event of the anniversary celebration.
The movie will also see the debut of Star Fox’s Fox McCloud on the big screen. Reportedly, Star Fox will be coming a lot sooner than the next Mario title. Learn more about that at this link.
