Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto Has No Plans to Slow Down

Shigeru Miyamoto hopes he is still making games in 10 years. His family, however, has been asking him about retirement.

Shigeru Miyamoto is responsible for some of the most iconic characters in gaming. Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Zelda, Samus, and the Star Fox crew all owe their existence to Miyamoto. In recent years, the Nintendo legend has been focusing on expanding the properties he’s created into media beyond video games. Still, he’s hard at work regularly, and he hopes that won’t stop anytime soon.

Shigeru Miyamoto Says His Family Wants Him to Consider Retirement

During a recent interview with Famitsu, translated by Nintendo Everything, the father of the Mario Bros. admits he doesn’t have anything specific in mind that he would like to pursue, though he jokingly said he would like to start a movement that everyone in their dog could join.

Additionally, he joked that his family is telling him perhaps it’s time he stopped. Still, when asked if he hopes to be doing the same thing in 10 years, he admitted that he would.

“Ah, yes, that’s right. The feeling of ‘I hope we can keep going’ fits perfectly. On set, we say things like, ‘It wouldn’t be surprising if I collapsed tomorrow, so make sure you’re okay (laughs).’ I hope we can keep going without any problems.”

In 2026, the Mario and Zelda franchises are primarily focused on their shift to the big screen. However, a 3D Mario game is bound to release on the new Nintendo Switch 2.
