Streets Of Rage Movie Has Found Its Writers & Director

The Streets of Rage movie is officially moving forward, as the long-awaited adaptation of SEGA’s iconic beat ’em up franchise has locked in both its writers and director.

Taking on screenplay duties are Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the writing duo behind the successful Sonic the Hedgehog films. They replace Derek Kolstad, best known for the John Wick franchise, who penned an earlier version of the script after Lionsgate first acquired the rights to Streets of Rage in 2022.

Directing the project will be Jeymes Samuel, whose previous credits include The Harder They Fall. Samuel will join a production team of Dmitri Johnson, Toru Nakahara, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson. Notably, Johnson also worked on the Sonic movies, though the Streets of Rage film was always his goal.

More On The Streets Of Rage Film

The production update comes via Variety, though details about the movie itself remain limited. Plot information has yet to be revealed, but the film is reportedly set to lean heavily into the cult-classic series’ signature elements, including its memorable characters, acclaimed electronic soundtrack, and fast-paced beat ’em up action.

Speaking about the creative team behind the adaptation, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Erin Westerman expressed confidence that Samuel is the perfect fit for the project:

We and our partners at Sega knew that ‘Streets of Rage’ demanded a bold filmmaker. Jeymes Samuel’s visceral and explosive style—not to mention his signature use of unforgettable music—is perfect for audiences both familiar with and new to the series. We are so excited for how he will bring his own memorable take to this beloved video game IP.

With a director, writers, and producers now firmly in place, the Streets of Rage movie is beginning to take shape, although fans will likely have to wait a little longer before learning more about its story, cast, or release window.
