Sonic Producer Says Streets of Rage Film Was Always His Goal

Dmitri Johnson, the producer of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, is attached to numerous video game adaptations, and the one he’s most excited about is the Streets of Rage project. He’s made no bones about it: the opportunity to make a Streets of Rage film is what excited him about attaching himself to the Sonic movies.

While the 4th Sonic the Hedgehog film is well into production and will feature Amy Rose’s story, the Streets of Rage film is only in the scripting phase. According to a Sega financial filing, the project will be animated, and Johnson is eager to lend his expertise.

Streets of Rage Movie in Works, Producer Hints at Talent

Speaking to Stephen Totilo of Game File at the inaugural iicon event for video game executives, Johnson joked that working on the Sonic franchise was the gateway drug into making the movie he actually wanted.

“When people ask us now, like, ‘How do you find that you go after for any projects?,’ We selfishly say, ‘We’re trying to make stuff for ourselves,’” he said.

He almost spoiled more news, but promised more would come soon.

“I almost broke news,” Johnson added. “There will be news. It’ll involve some ‘exciting talent around that one.’”

In addition to the Sega projects he’s attached to, he’s also attached to many more in the world of gaming. These projects include the live-action Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 film and a Slime Rancher film. Check out his full IMDB here.
