Sega Launches Sega Universe to Revive Classic Franchises

Sega has implemented a new strategy to revitalize its classic properties.

On April 24, Sega launched the Sega Universe brand to push ideas built on classic content. Using the tagline “No Old, Stay Gold,” Sega is preparing to push forward new projects based on OutRun, Streets of Rage, NiGHTS into Dreams, Guardian Heroes, SGGG, Sakura Wars, and more.

“SEGA UNIVERSE” is a project based on the concept of “NO OLD, STAY GOLD,” which shines a light on classic titles that are still loved by fans, distinct from current titles, and aims to transcend the world of games and deliver new ways to enjoy them. As the first phase, we will develop anniversary projects that focus on titles that will celebrate their anniversaries in 2026, delivering nostalgic yet new entertainment content,” the press release reads.

Sega Has Discussed Animated Projects for Several Classic IPs

For several months, it has been known that Sega planned to revitalize several classic properties not only in video games but also in other media. In Sega’s Q3 2025 FY earnings, particularly the animated section, several classic Sega games are set to receive animated releases.

Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Eternal Champions, and OutRun were all listed with TBD titles in the animated section. It is not specified which of these releases will be adapted into a TV series and which will be made into films.

The video game universe at large is progressing beyond the confines of gaming alone. Nintendo has seen many of its classic properties featured on the big screen through the Super Mario Bros duology. Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, and God of War are also being turned into television series.

Sega has also seen success bringing the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise to theaters. The fourth movie is currently in production and is said to introduce Amy Rose. Learn more here.

  • First they should buy Platinum also give RGG Studio Shenmue and Yakuza PSP to remake have Suzuki supervise the remakes then make 4 and 5. Have Platinum make Shadow 2, a Silver game, and Burning Rangers maybe even Nights, Billy Hatcher, Alex Kidd, Deep Fear, Zombie Revenge, Snowboard Kids, and others. RGG could handle Shinobi too in 3D. On that topic where is the other games announced Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Streets Of Rage, Golden Axe, and Virtua Fighter 6 they all disappeared? Also they need to remake Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, make 3 bring Shiro Maekawa back, make a new Sonic Riders make a new Sonic Battle or remake the original with CyberConnect2 Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm gameplay. Skies of Arcadia remake, Shinning remakes, Sakura Wars, and Phantasy Star honestly maybe Platinum could handle those too. Then anime bring back Sonic X, bring back Shenmue The Animation, make a Yakuza anime faithful to the OG games not 0 or Kiwami with Nagoshi supervising, same with Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shin Megami Tensei, Persona 2, Devil Survivor 1 and 2, Groove On Fight, Sakura Wars, Shinning, Phantasy Star, Resonance Of Fate, and others.
