Valve has announced that the Steam Deck prices will be rising by as much as $300, effective immediately.
The changes are now already live on the Steam store, which shows the new prices.
1TB OLED has been increased from $649 to $949 (+$300)
512GB OLED has been increased from $549 to $789 (+$240).
In a blog post, Valve said prices are going up due to “rising memory and storage costs” and that the new prices “reflect the current state of component costs and other global logistical challenges across the industry as a whole.”
The company’s Steam Machine still doesn’t have a price attached despite the device being close to release, but if the recent price hikes for the Steam Deck are anything to go by, we’re looking at a hefty price.
In February, the company said that it was reassessing the Steam Machine’s price because of the same reason for today’s Steam Deck price hike; memory and storage shortages/costs.
“Our goal of shipping all three products in the first half of the year has not changed. But we have work to do to land on concrete pricing and launch dates that we can confidently announce,” they said.
Around the time the console was revealed, Linus Tech Tips said they believe that the console will cost around $700, but even back then, we believed that the price prediction was on the lower side… Probably even completely wrong. We wouldn’t at all be surprised to see the console now firmly over $1000.
As for when the Steam Machine’s price will actually be announced is unclear, but today’s news of the Steam Deck’s price hike isn’t surprising.
