Square Enix Producer recently spoke about being unsure whether the next Final Fantasy instalments (FF17 or FF18) will feature turn-based combat or action-based gameplay.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 by Sandfall Interactive has proven to the fans that you can still develop one of the highest-rated games of the year while featuring turn-based combat. Looking at its success, one of Square Enix’s investors recently mentioned that they would like “the new Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy games to be turn-based”. However, the long-time producer for the series doesn’t have a clear-cut answer for it right now.
Final Fantasy Producer Unsure Whether Next Instalments Will be Turn-Based
During an interview with AnimeNewsNetwork, Final Fantasy producer Naoki Yoshida was asked whether the next mainline Final Fantasy games will be drawing inspiration from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Yoshida explained that with “turn-based versus action, it tends to isolate the gameplay to just the battle system.” As a result, it “doesn’t take into account what kind of game the creators want to deliver to players.”
Yoshida elaborated that a game’s systems are designed around the ‘graphical quality’ and the ‘narrative’ that the developers wish to deliver to the players. These include the battle system, game design, and gameplay feel. Hence, “it’s not a clear-cut answer, whether it will become all turn-based, or if it’s going to become more action-based.” Yoshida also explained that he’s “not necessarily going to be on Final Fantasy 17”; that’s why they do not wish to “obstruct or limit” the future director or producer of Final Fantasy 17 and 18 by promising turn-based or action-based combat.
In other news, Final Fantasy 9 Remake’s development is seemingly ‘in trouble‘. Also, an FF16 Switch 2 port was recently teased by the producer.
