After 22 years, Skype is officially no more. As of May 5, 2025, Microsoft is sunsetting the messaging service in favor of its Microsoft Teams platform.
The decision to shut down Skype was first announced back in February.
At the time, Microsoft says that the decision was done to “streamline [its] free consumer communications offerings so [it] can more easily adapt to customer needs.

Skype first launched in 2003, letting users make calls between computers. It was acquired by Microsoft for $8.5 billion in 2011, and added to various Microsoft properties such as Windows and Xbox.
Those who were still using Skype up through the end will need to migrate over to Teams. To make it simpler, existing Skype logins should work with the free version of Teams without issue. Should you not want to used teams, you can export your data. All data will be deleted in January 2026.
