Road to Vostok, which has been dubbed ‘single-player Escape from Tarkov’ by many, launched five days ago and has taken the survival-shooter world by storm. The game’s solo developer revealed in a recent update on Steam that more than 140,000 copies have been sold since the game launched into early access.
The game, which was in a demo state for the last three or four years, has emerged as a success on Steam, presenting users with a gritty, hardcore survival atmosphere loaded with features and potential. However, in a recent post, the solo developer stressed that not all is going swimmingly behind the scenes.
The Limitations of Solo Development
The post on Steam about Road to Vostok opened with some strong numbers. Antti, the game’s solo developer, revealed that 140,000 copies have been sold, the review score is sitting at ‘Very Positive’ from more than 3,000 reviews, and the daily average user count is around 25,421 players.
He then revealed that the game, which had ‘zero marketing budget’, had been ‘extremely successful and secured the entire development roadmap for Road to Vostok.’ The early access launch has provided the funds necessary to completely deliver everything promised in the earlier stages of development, which is the point of an early access release.
However, Antti then explained:
Being a solo-developer has many perks and benefits, but also a lot of limitations when it comes to things like launching your game to a semi-large audience.
One of these limitations is your capacity to handle upcoming information. For example, I currently have ~11k unread emails and most of my communication channels are pretty much “running away from me”.
He also said that key-request bots are swarming him, his mental state is being impacted by the work required to deliver the game, and he can’t yet hire more assistance because the funds from the launch aren’t available for another month.
Fortunately, there’s a (temporary) end in sight. Antti said he’ll take a break once the first batch of hotfixes is applied, stepping away and preparing himself for what comes next. According to the dedicated developer, that will be AI improvements and ‘major additions’ to the game’s ecosystem.
He signed off with a thankful note:
I’m really happy how this launch is going and seeing people enjoying the game!
I think that I managed to find a good price point (and launch date) for the release which is fair and aligned with the current feature-set. I also think the game launched at a good state for an early access title, consider the response and how I feared those hardware related launch issues which turned out to be really minimal in large picture.
Once again thanks to everyone who bought the game, provided feedback, left a review and provided me this opportunity to secure the entire development roadmap for Road to Vostok.
