Resident Evil 9 Started as an ‘Open-World Multiplayer Game,’ It’s Claimed

New claims about Resident Evil 9 have surfaced, and it seems the title was originally an open-world multiplayer game.

Spotted by Gameranx, DuskGolem recently spoke about Resident Evil 9’s original open-world multiplayer setting. Their post on X (formerly Twitter) first clears rumours about Resident Evil 9 that are untrue, such as the “The Native American Wendigo Blood Moon” and “Goat Man with Jill in a Hospital” rumours are “bullshit”.

DuskGolem adds that the work on Resident Evil 9 began in “early 2017”. As a reaction to Resident Evil 7’s sales not meeting expectations, they wanted to go in the opposite direction with the next mainline instalment. This meant the original version of RE9 would start as a “big open-world multiplayer game,” which featured Leon and Jill on a fictional island based on Singapore.

The source clarified that this was the original version of Resident Evil 9. When Resident Evil Village was released in 2021, RE9 received a heavy reboot. However, some of the details about the upcoming game have remained the same, such as Leon playing the main character. DuskGolem is leaving it up to Capcom to reveal the rest of the details.

Last year, DuskGolem claimed that Resident Evil 9 would be set on an island “inspired by Singapore.” They also stated that the game would use RE Engine as an open-world title; however, the multiplayer aspect is new information.

It was also claimed that Resident Evil 9 will “almost undoubtedly be revealed this year,” and a release is planned for 2026. The insider added that Capcom has already delayed the game twice and feels there won’t be another delay. However, they don’t know whether the game will be revealed in fiscal year 2025 or 2026.

Moreover, Resident Evil 9 was teased by Capcom in an RE4 video recently. What are your thoughts on RE9 being an open-world multiplayer game originally? Let us know below, and join the official Insider Gaming forums discussion.
