Red Rover Layoffs: Dev Behind ‘Brilliant’ Survival Shooter Cuts Employee Count

Red Rover Interactive, the team behind an upcoming post-apocalyptic survival shooter called Enginefall, has revealed that an undisclosed number of layoffs are being made across two sites. In a statement, the team revealed a restructuring process was ongoing at the firm that would unfortunately be necessary to see the company move towards a more sustainable future.

I previewed Enginefall for a couple of hours with the Red Rover team last month and thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game. It’s a unique concept, planting players on moving trains and allowing them to fight, survive, loot, and extract, all while making friends, and of course, enemies.

Enginefall Development Still Moving Forward

In a statement obtained by Game Developer, the team at Red Rover Interactive explained:

Our immediate focus is on supporting those impacted through this transition as best we can. We are working with a specialist recruiter to help team members find new opportunities and to provide as much support as possible during this process.

Enginefall wouldn’t be at the stage it is today without the talent, creativity and commitment of the whole team and for that we are deeply grateful.

It was noted that it’s unclear how many employees are being let go, but those affected are being cut from both the Oslo and Newcastle offices.

Enginefall, and by association Red Rover, has secured millions of dollars in investment to bring this stunning shooter to life, which has been wishlisted hundreds of thousands of times on Steam.

It’s an ambitious premise that combines elements of games like Rust and Escape from Tarkov, while sprinkling in a social element and a high-stakes, ever-changing, and somewhat procedural gameplay loop. There are plenty of emergent opportunities that pop up, and no two runs are promised to be the same.

In my preview piece, I wrote about Enginefall:

Enginefall’s introduction left me feeling extremely positive about this game. I’m confident the kinks will be ironed out, and as the developers explained, there’s a bold pipeline of content and plans for post-launch, which should be arriving later this year, all being well.
