Gearbox head Randy Pitchford says that “real fans” will pay $80 for Borderlands 4 if that’s the price of the game.
Recently, a fan commented that Borderlands 4 “better not be” $80 on a post Pitchford had made. That immediately garnered from Pitchford who said that the pricing decision wasn’t his call. However, he also added a comment on the idea of games being too expensive at $80, and said that true fans will find a way to pay the price.
“If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen,” he said about the $80 price point. “My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen.”
Pitchford’s comments claiming that if they were a “real fan” they’d find a way to spend $80 on a new game was met with backlash from a number of people on social media.
“The price is not the issue the issue is what our ownership looks like now compared to back in 1991,” said one user.
Added another: “Dude you must be out of touch with today’s economy. It is over 4x more difficult for a single person to make a living with the current cost of living.”
The debate around video game prices continues to be one of the most controversial topics in the industry. With many studios starting to push games up to $80—the second price hike this generation—it has led to plenty of talk about the value of video games. Nintendo seemingly kickstarted it with the reveal that Mario Kart World would be $80. That has since been followed up by Microsoft stating that it will soon be charging $80 for the base version of some games.
