Sony has reportedly still not settled on a release window for the next generation of PlayStation, with the PS6 launch window still undecided amidst the rising costs of RAM.
This news comes from a Q&A session following Sony’s most recent financial results, which revealed that the PS5 is on the cusp of 100 million lifetime units sold, as well as the $765 million loss over Bungie.
PlayStation 6’s Future Is Undecided
Hiroki Totoki, the President and CEO of Sony, discussed the PlayStation 6’s future, beginning with the rising costs of components. It seems like Sony has acquired the materials needed for the rest of the calendar year, but it’s from 2027 that causes concern.
“Looking at the current circumstances, the memory price is also expected to be very high FY 2027, because there will still be a shortage of supply. So under that assumption, we must think carefully what we will do,” Totoki explained.
With that in mind, he discusses the PS6, stating, “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices, so we would like to really observe and follow the situation.”
Rumours surrounding the PS6 have circulated for quite some time now, with some reports previously suggesting that Sony could delay the console as late as 2029 due to rising hardware costs and global supply concerns. While nothing official has been confirmed, Totoki’s comments suggest that those rumours may not be entirely unrealistic.
That uncertainty might spell problems, but Titoki seems to view it differently. He explained that the number of active users on PlayStation platforms continues to grow, so Sony has time to perfect its strategy for the future generation.
Titoki went as far as to suggest that they’re considering “changing business models to come up with the best solution and strategy.” What form that presents itself in remains unknown, but it’s apparent that Sony is looking to the next generation of PlayStation—even if some major decisions are still up in the air.
