The push toward a fully digital era appears to be gaining momentum, as evidenced by Sony’s FY2025 Q4 data, which shows that 85% of full games purchased are digital downloads.
It’s time to huddle around Sony‘s latest earnings report, which shows some fascinating data. Not only is Bungie costing PlayStation a lot of money, but many of Marathon’s sales, and games in general, are now largely digital.
PS4 & PS5 Digital Downloads Represented 78% of Sales in 2025

The Sony PlayStation FY2025 Q4 Financial earnings are in, and Q4 saw an 85% ‘Full game software digital download ratio.’
Basic maths tells us that across PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 media, only 15% of sales were physical.
Compare this to Q1 (83%), Q2 (72%), and Q3 (76%), and this gives us an average figure of 78% across the whole year.
This is a 2% increase on 2024, with FY25 Q4’s 85% comfortably eclipsing the next-best figure in 2024—80% in FY2024 Q1 and Q4.
There’s no denying that physical media needs to stay. People love keeping physical media, and eradicating physical media would bring an end to Collector’s Editions and more.
It’s unlikely Sony will ever stop physical production, but it shows the mentality and way gaming is heading more and more.
What do you make of these eye-opening stats? Could Sony shift away from physical media altogether in a bid to reduce costs, even if just for its first-party offerings? Let us know your thoughts via the Insider Gaming Discord, and weigh in on whether this would be a good thing, or if you’d stop buying games as a result.
