Xbox has announced the project name of its next-generation console.
Today, Xbox announced that its next-generation console is named Project Helix. New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma promises that the next console will lead in performance and serve as a hybrid for Xbox and PC games. Sharma says she will be speaking more about this with partners and game studios at her first GDC next week.
Asha Sharma Helms Xbox’s Next Steps Into the Future
Asha Sharma was put into power in the final week of February 2026. She has consistently expressed her desire to recommit to core Xbox players. She believes that will be accomplished through games with deep emotional resonance.
AMD recently said that it is on track to support a 2027 launch for new Xbox hardware. However, Microsoft isn’t interested in committing to a hard launch date at this time.
Recent memory shortages have cast doubt on when the next generation of console gaming will truly begin. Reportedly, the PlayStation 6 may not even release until 2029. Learn more about that here.
Xbox’s Project Helix May Face Opposition from Steam Machine
Still, Xbox remains at a crossroads. They’re far removed from the days of the Xbox 360’s dominance and have even pivoted more towards the Sega route of being a high-profile third-party publisher, releasing games on Sony and Nintendo platforms as well as on their own.
Asha Sharma recently responded to a fan on social media, letting them know that she heard their plea for a return to Xbox-exclusive titles. While that may be a step too far in reverse, Xbox will now look to lead the market in PC-console hybrids.
They will face competition from Valve’s forthcoming Steam Machine. That particular hybrid hardware is slated for a release in this calendar year. Learn the latest on the Steam Machine here.
In any case, Project Helix has been announced, and Insider Gaming will continue to report any updates on future hardware releases.
