Microsoft expects its current-generation Xbox Series consoles to have a longer-than-usual lifespan.
The gaming industry is beginning to consider what the next generation of hardware will look like. The Nintendo Switch 2 was released in 2025, and both PlayStation and Xbox are focused on their next iterations. Microsoft is focused on a future where almost any device can be considered an Xbox. In 2025, this led to the launch of the ROG Ally Xbox handhelds and to additional releases from Microsoft-owned developers on Sony and Nintendo platforms.
Regarding a next-generation home offering from Xbox, AMD CEO Lisa Su recently stated that development of the next-gen Xbox, which will feature an AMD semi-custom SoC, is progressing well and could support a potential 2027 launch. However, that doesn’t mean 2027 is a lock for players looking to bring the next Xbox console to their living room.
A 2027 Launch Window Is Not Solidified
A new report from Jez Corden notes that Microsoft hasn’t committed to a firm 2027 launch window for its next major platform and expects the current Xbox generation and the PS5 to have a longer lifespan. This is a result of a “broadening hardware endpoint ecosystem.” It’s also noted that Xbox isn’t sure of the price of its next console due to current global economic conditions and rising memory and storage costs.
Still, even if the next-gen Xbox comes in at a premium price of $1,000, Microsoft stated that, like other developers, it is ensuring its games run on Nintendo Switch 2 and other devices, so all players can still experience Xbox games. Additionally, it’s reported that Microsoft is collaborating with OEMs such as ASUS to develop a range of next-gen Xbox options for gamers at various price points. This is not unusual, as Microsoft has been releasing consoles with multiple SKUs for generations.
Microsoft Wants a Polished Windows Experience on the Next Xbox
Furthermore, it was reported that Microsoft insiders were caught off guard by Lisa Su’s comments about a 2027 launch for the next console. There is no internal commitment to a launch date at Xbox, as much of the Next Generation experience depends on improvements to Windows 11.
Microsoft’s Windows and Xbox teams are working more closely than ever to deliver the best Windows OS experience on Xbox. Right now, 2027 is viewed internally as a “best-case scenario,” but Microsoft is not committing to a specific date to ensure a proper experience for players.
Microsoft is also considering changes to its Game Pass subscription service. These changes are long-term and may not be implemented for quite some time. Learn more about them here.

They do not need a console no one will buy it. PS6 should launch in 2027 extending PS5 or releasing it will be a L either way
I was very excited for the series x, but I do not see what another console could possibly be good for in as little as one year. Not to even mention how I would never buy another microslop console
