Cancelled SSX Successor Project Gravity Concept Art Surfaces

SSX’s spiritual successor, Project Gravity, got some surprising new information, despite its cancellation.

In the 2000s, the SSX series was king of the snowboarding-simulation hill. The games, done by EA, delivered quality riding and characters with a unique aesthetic and style that fans adored. After a reboot in 2012, the series has been dormant since. The creatives behind SSX did work on a spiritual successor, Project Gravity, with 2K, but it was cancelled in 2024. However, new concept art shows what could have been of the title.

Former member of the team, Gordon Wang, shared new concept art of the title on ArtStation. In the art, we can see several locales and slopes, feeling ripped straight from SSX. There’s a mix of in-engine screenshots and concept art, so fans can imagine how it may have played and looked. The art can be seen here on the artist’s page. As most of the team who worked on the series took part in Project Gravity, it’s no surprise that it feels nostalgic.

A 2024 article from Kotaku chronicled Project Gravity’s cancellation, as the game wasn’t announced before then. Being published by 2K, the game would’ve reunited the SSX team, including creators Steve Rechtschaffner and Larry LaPierre. For many, SSX’s formula hasn’t been replicable, with games like Steep scratching the itch slightly. While Project Gravity is not happening, the team at SuperNatural Studios is still around, so perhaps a newer version could come to light.

  • Atari or Acclaim could pick it up. Honestly want to see someone make a SSX3 fused with Jet Set Radio game was hoping TeamReptile would do something like that. Acclaim announce a snowboarding game like that Hyperyuki Snowboard but it’s not open world just racing it seems.
