The wait for a new Pokémon title is coming to an end, with the release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A now right around the corner, and we’ve got all the details on whether the title is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive.
Releasing October 16, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is headlined by the return of fan-favorite Mega Evolutions, including the additions of several new entries, and it’s already been revealed that the title will receive post-launch DLC too.
It’s been a big year for Nintendo with the Switch 2 launch, which has seen titles like Mario Kart: World and Donkey Kong Bananza as platform exclusives, and we’ve got everything you need to know about whether Pokémon follows suit.
Is Pokémon Legends: Z-A a Nintendo Switch 2 Exclusive?
No, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is not exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, and is available to purchase on the original version of the Nintendo Switch.
Although the likes of Mario Kart and Donkey Kong have released new franchise entries exclusively onto Switch 2 this year, Pokémon is not following suit with Legends: Z-A and the title is available on both generations of the console.
There are no exclusives on Switch 2 either, with all Pokémon and Mega Evolutions available on both generations of the console, and both versions offer the same experience.
On top of this, the Mega Dimension DLC announced that follows on from the events of the main story in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is also available for both generations of Nintendo Switch.
Legends: Z-A could be the final Pokémon title available on both generations of the console, however, as Pokémon Pokopia has been announced for 2026 and is a Switch 2 exclusive.
Can You Upgrade Pokémon Legends: Z-A to Nintendo Switch 2 Edition?
Yes, an upgrade is available for the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, saving you from splashing out another huge chunk of cash if you get the latest console later down the line.
An Upgrade Pack is available for $9.99 via the Nintendo Store, and other retailers, which unlocks the Switch 2 edition of the game if you already own the Nintendo Switch version digitally or physically.
In some regions, a combo edition is also available to purchase, providing the Nintendo Switch version of the game alongside the Upgrade Pack to use for Switch 2 later down the line.
