Pearl Abyss, the makers of Crimson Desert, are now speaking on the game’s success and discussing their approach to player feedback and how they update the game accordingly.
Crimson Desert has been a historic game for the South Korean entertainment industry. The game has recently surpassed 5 million sales, and Pearl Abyss was even commended by South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok for the accomplishment. Now, a company executive is discussing some of the details behind the game’s development.
Pearl Abyss Details Crimson Desert’s Live Feedback Approach
Pearl Abyss’s head of publishing, Will Powers, recently spoke with The Washington Post about the game’s success. One of the main topics of discussion was the team’s responsiveness and the regular updates delivered outside a pre-announced roadmap. Powers says it was intentional not to have a roadmap. They didn’t want set-in-stone dates to answer to. More importantly, they didn’t want to make any presumptions.
“Everything, patch-wise, content-wise, has been iterated in real time based on feedback, based on response,” Powers said. “If you bake in a road map, you’re presuming. We are not baking in presumptions around what the players want,” he added.
However, they also respond to fans’ innovativeness and the tricks they find to make the game a little easier. For example, some players discovered a method to make Kliff move quickly in the air with a stabbing technique. That wasn’t intentional, but rather than patching out the ability, they added an animation to the maneuver and gave it a little flair.
“We’re not onerous about it — if an idea didn’t come from us, then it can’t be in the game,” Powers said. “I think that’s something that [other companies are] too ego-driven a lot of the time to be able to accept other people’s ideas. It’s almost Silicon Valley-esque. A good idea can come from anywhere.”
