Nintendo’s Controversial Remake Strategy ‘Leads to Future Developments’

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has defended the company’s approach to remakes, stating that bringing older titles back to life ‘leads to future developments’.

While Nintendo has published plenty of new entries to beloved franchises recently, including Mario Kart World and Splatoon Raiders, there’s also been a significant upturn in the number of older titles receiving a remake.

Star Fox was released last month, which was a new version of the original Nintendo 64 title, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is receiving its own remake later this year.

Miyamoto Defends Nintendo’s Remake Strategy

While those remakes will be welcomed by many, others have been left disappointed with those approaches, rather than creating a brand-new entry in the franchise, but Miyamoto has explained the company’s stance.

Speaking to Japanese magazine Famitsu, via Nintendo Everything, Miyamoto explained that it opens the door for new gamers to experience titles for the first time, and also leads to further developments in the future.

“Some people might say there are a lot of remakes, but after five years, a lot of people have outgrown games and stop playing them,” he said.

“Young people today don’t have the opportunity to play games from 10 years ago, so remaking them to be more playable and releasing them again is a good way to meet the demand.

“Letting people know the original games also leads to future developments, so we’ve been actively pursuing that recently.”

Nintendo has a big slew of releases still to come in 2026, including Nintendo Switch Sports Resort and DLC for Pokémon Pokopia.
