The first issue of a prequel comic for Marvel’s Wolverine has been released, and it sheds some light on the events leading up to the game’s narrative, as well as serving as an official introduction to Team X and its cast.
Written by Insomniac Games‘ Narrative Director Walt Williams, the comic is available digitally on Marvel Unlimited, though physical copies are also provided to those who visit Insomniac’s booth at San Diego Comic Con.
A Closer Look At The Comic
The plot of Marvel’s Wolverine is still to be uncovered in full, but the game’s synopsis makes it clear that he was once part of the task force Team X, though he walked out on them three years before the game takes place. That said, he seemingly rejoins them for the game, and the comic looks set to give us a closer look at the team and what may have led Wolverine to step away.
The first thing that the comic shows is the roster for Team X, and it includes Wolverine, Sabretooth, Sunfire and Mystique. We’ve already seen Mystique and Sabretooth in the trailers, but it was widely suspected that they’d be villains for Wolverine to handle: are they allies instead? It’s shaping up to look that way.
Unsurprisingly, the team is infiltrating what they think to be one of Bolivar Trask’s weapon depots, though Wolverine has a bad feeling about the mission. Ultimately, he’s overruled by the team, but what they uncover is anything but a munitions bunker…
You’ll have to read the first issue for yourself to find out more, with the title ending on a notable cliff-hanger. It’s unclear when the next issues will be released, but it’s bound to be wrapped up before the game’s September 15, 2026, release date. In the meantime, give the latest trailer another watch below.
