While its legacy remains tied to the 1990s and its emergence, which gave Nintendo a black eye during the console war between the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, it has been the series’ ability to adapt that has kept it going since Sega left the hardware race a quarter century ago.

Sonic Team Boss Explains How Sega Plans to Keep Sonic Growing
Today, the Sonic franchise is thriving, with 2D experiences like Sonic Superstars, 3D experiences like Sonic Frontiers, niche indie titles like Sonic Pico Park, and fun multiplayer titles like Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
During a recent interview with 80.LV, Takashi Iizuka, Head of Sonic Team, discussed the character’s versatility and the importance of delivering authentic experiences while remaining competitive in an ever-changing market.
“Each of the different pillars contributes in meaningful ways to the Sonic franchise, and we’re looking forward to what we have in store,” he said. “As you saw at Summer Game Fest, we have a consistent slate of post-release content for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds… The introduction of a second season signals our long-term investment in the game. While keeping momentum in such a competitive market is always a challenge, our team remains dedicated to delivering content that stays true to the Sonic universe.”
