Many have asked how Nintendo Switch 2 compares to current-gen consoles, and based on Koei Temco’s latest statements, the new console seems comparable to the Xbox Series S.
The Nintendo Switch 2 was released on June 5, 2025, and it took the console less than a week to hit new records. Within the first 4 days, the Switch 2 became Nintendo’s fastest-selling hardware globally, selling over 3.5 million units within this period. The console boasts new graphical and performance improvements; however, how that compares to current-gen consoles is unknown.
Nintendo Switch 2 Closer to Xbox Series S Than PS4
During an interview with Wccftech, Wild Hearts S’ producer Takuto Edagawa revealed some details about the Nintendo Switch 2. Regarding raw computing power, Edagawa was asked whether Switch 2 was closer to the PS4 or Xbox Series S. He answered that it is difficult to generalise due to raw computing power having many characteristics. However, he feels the Switch 2 is closer to Xbox Series S than the PS4.
The Wild Hearts S producer was also asked other questions about the Switch 2, such as when they received the development kit and what resolution and frame rate they were going for with this version. The producer refrained from answering these questions; however, he did reveal one of the challenges they faced during development.
Edagawa revealed that “even though this isn’t particular to the Switch 2’s processing power,” the developers struggled with processing when multiplayer increased from 3 to 4 players. He added that the team is “very particular with the character creation feature, and it is very robust,” which is why adding the additional character turned out to be a challenge.
