During a recent Q&A session at the 2026 Nintendo shareholders’ meeting, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked about employees not having a union and revealed that the company had increased base salaries by 10% to retain employees.

We are maintaining salaries at an appropriate level. I believe it is important to keep compensation levels appropriate,” he said, according to a translation by NStyles on social media. “We are implementing salary increases, such as raising the base salary by 10%.”

This positive news for employees of the gaming stalwart comes at a time of great turbulence for many in the gaming industry. New data shows that hardware sales for both Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox have fallen. Many studios are announcing layoffs, and Xbox recently announced another price increase for its hardware.

Months ago, Nintendo announced a price increase for the Switch 2. Those increases will go into effect in North America in September. However, console sales have remained strong.
