Nintendo Switch 2’s first 12 months’ numbers are out, and it has become the second fastest-selling gaming hardware in US history.
In May 2026, the major console manufacturers are facing significant challenges. PlayStation recorded its lowest hardware sales for May in the past 25 years, while Xbox experienced its worst May in recorded history. In contrast, the Switch 2 is gaining momentum, having achieved a new milestone within its first 12 months.
Switch 2 Hits 5.9 Million Units Sold in the US in First 12 Months
The latest US video game sales data from Matt Piscatella on BlueSky reveals that Switch 2 became the second-fastest-selling gaming console in US history. The console managed to help increase hardware spending in May, offsetting the dip by PlayStation. In its first 12 months, the latest console has sold 5.9 million units, placing it behind only the Game Boy Advance, which sold over 6.5 million units in its first year.
Overall video game spending in May 2026 saw an increase. In that month, US video game spending reached $4.2 billion, which is a 3% rise compared to the previous year. Year-to-date spending also grew, finishing 4% higher than last year at a total of $23 billion. The Switch 2 is leading the charts in both unit sales and revenue for May 2026 and for the year-to-date in 2026. The PlayStation 5 ranks second in both categories for May and year-to-date.
